PURPOSE
o provide a center for a higher civic and sccial life; to
institute and maintain educational and philanthropic enterprises,
and to investigate and impreve the conditions in the industrial
districts of Chicago. "
"The cld homestead of Mr. Charles J. Hull was the first home
of the undertaking, the Butler Building was erected in the second
year, the Gymnasium and Coffee House buildings in 1893 and the
cther buildings have been gradually added.
The 1ast one, the
Boys Club Building was formally opened in January 1907
In
each case the new building housed
activities which had been organ-
ized and tested in smaller quarters for months or years."

Hull House has, in addition to the many usual settlement
activities of clubs, classes, etc., a coffee house; a theater with
fine organ, where oratorios are given, and among the plays presented
are ancient and modern Greek dramas; industrial museum with shop
and various handicrafts, childr en's building, women's club house;
a boys club house; apartments for residents and a men's house.
