"The Company early possessed several tenement h.ouses,with groups of
4 and 8 tenements under l roof. These contained a living room,kitchen and
2 rooms with large closets. The houses were situated within 5 feet of the
road,allowing only a small front yard. Fach house was allotted a garden,
where during the summer the enployees could raise their own vegetables.
The only plumbing consisted of a sink in the small entry. The rent was
from $1.50 to $1.75 mer week. With the building of the new houses this old
type was discardec,and on the new tract of land which was purchased,lots
were laid off about 100 feet ride and 150 feet deep. 2-1amily houses were
planned and built along nore modern lines, the cottage effect being borne
in mind as much as possible. They contain on the lst floor kitchen,parlor,
diningroom and bathroom. Upstairs, one type has 4 bedrooms,another 3,and
another 2. The houses are situated about 30 feet from the road,giving suf-
ficient lawn in front which lends itself to adormment with flower beds or
shrubbery. In the rear is the garden,the hen yards, and also anple space
for the clothes yard. They are built of wood,shingled, and range in rental
price fron $1.90 to $2.50 a week per tenement. In 1904 the cCmpany built a
few houses along these lines to rent at about the same pri.ce as the old
tenement blocks, $1.50 to $1.75.
