you go ahead with the idea?" Then soon my wife was talk-
ing about the music we could have in the chapel; so she, too,
had become a supporter.
Now that everyone was for the chapel I suddenly was very
fearful and badly wanted out! I argued with God saying, as
if I were talking to you, "God, I was only joking, I know
nothing at all about chapels. A lot of people are more able,
and there is not
wasn't allowed to comfortably give up, and soon I was startled
to believe and really know that the chapel was God's dream
and God's plan for me.
Still trying to set up barriers, I decided no good architect
could be found within hundreds of miles of these woods; but
I was soon directed to Mr. E. Fay Jones of Fayetteville, a
nationally honored and recognized architect. I was certain
he would reject my little chapel, as I knew he had been work-
ing on projects of greater magnitude. Then I could quit and
go home.
After I told Mr. Jones of my dream, he became very in-
terested, and he was not really a barrier at all!

You walk down a wooded trail, move around a curve and
there stands a majestic glass chapel
to God. Welcome to Thorncrown Chapel.
It all began a few summers ago when I would daily leave
my home to go downhill to the mailbox. There were often
several cars of visitors sitting there enjoying these mountains
and getting away from busy U.S. 62.
One day while coming back up the hill the idea came to
me that my wife and I should build a little glass chapel on
the side of the hill to give wayfarers an opportunity to relax
in an inspiring and peaceful way. I first mentioned it to my
wife, but she was not sure about the idea. Looking for sup-
port, I contacted my childhood minister and told him my
dream for a glass chapel, and he said, "No, I would recom-
mend that you not go into that." I tried to forget about the
idea, but it was never far away.
The next summer we were back on this hillside and had to
leave to attend the funeral of a close relative in Pine Bluff,
Arkansas. My old minister friend was conducting the funeral.
He later pulled me aside and said, "I've prayed much about
your chapel idea, and I find nothing wrong with it. Why don't
