OPERATION
A. Plug line cord into a-c outlet with
proper line voltage. Label on back of
illuminator specifies input-power re-
quirements.
B. According to viewing requirements,
set illuminator in upright or inclined
position. A unique stand design makes
it possible to set up your viewer:
1. On a 55° angle to the plane of a flat
surface. To accomplish this, flip the
wire stand to the back position (see
figure 1A).
2. Upright
in this position, the wire
stand is folded so that it provides a
flat bottom and allows the illumina-
tor to stand easily in the upright posi-
tion (see figure 1B).
C. Turn illuminator on by depressing
red pushbutton for approximately four
seconds.

NOTE - With all fluorescent lamps, the emission of phosphors is constantly chang-
ing immediately after startup; this emission becomes stabilized when the lamp.
reaches heat equilibrium. Therefore, it is recommended that all illuminators em-
ploying fluorescent lamps be allowed a warm-up period of at least 15 minutes
before prints or transparencies are viewed.
D. Using toggle switch on top of illuminator select one of two illumination levels:
(1) 400 ft. lamberts; (2) 500 ft. lamberts.
E. To turn illuminator off, depress black pushbutton.

OPERATION & MAINTENANCE
MAINTENANCE - Cleaning and Relamping
A. GENERAL The reflecting surfaces and diffusing panel of the ALT-214 or
PLT-214 should be cleaned at least once every month with soap and water; clean-
ing should be performed more often if conditions require.
WARNING - Be sure to disconnect a-c input power prior to cleaning.
Two 14-watt Macbeth long-life fluorescent lamps are employed in the ALT-214
and PLT 214 illuminators; F14T12/AVX lamps are employed in the ALT-214, and
F14T12/50 lamps are employed in the PLT-214. Although these lamps have a
burning life of 5000 hours or more, it is advisable to relamp after 2000 or 3000
hours of burning in order to be certain that you keep within the close "standard"
tolerances. If the illuminator is used eight hours per day, five days per week,
relamping should be done once a year.
NOTE-To preserve the original quality of illumination and to assure standardiza-
tion with other Macbeth illuminators, (also for adherence to the draft USA Stand-
ard for Transparency Illumination) relamp only with Macbeth fluorescent lamps.
B. PROCEDURE - To clean or relamp the ALT-214 or PLT-214 illuminator, place
it flat on a table or bench with the viewing panel up. Loosen the two knurled
knobs on the top (near the handle). Lift the front panel until the top flange just
clears the case, and slide the front panel toward the bottom of the unit just far
enough to release the complete front panel. Remove the front panel assembly
and viewing panel; the interior of the illuminator and the fluorescent lamps are
now readily accessible. Remove fluorescent lamps in the conventional manner
and clean the interior and reflector surfaces with soap and water; replace fluores-
cent lamps if required.
REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT OF ELECTRICAL WIRING AND
COMPONENTS (BALLASTS, LAMPHOLDERS, ETC.)
Proceed as follows:
1. Loosen and remove knurled knobs on top of illuminator.
2. Loosen screws securing dark gray top cover assembly to illuminator housing.
Lift top cover assembly sufficiently to clear machine screws. Tilt cover assem-
bly towards front of illuminator while taking care not to strain and break wires
connected to components mounted on cover assembly.
3. With top cover assembly removed from illuminator housing, all wiring connec-
tions and components except lampholders are readily accessible. Each lamp-
holder is secured to side of illuminator housing by two machine screws. Repair
and replacement procedures are obvious upon inspection.
