The whole realm of picturee (paintingeinoluded) are the
shades of meaning of the major emotions and the vague emotions
themeelves thet are unrelated to the major ones that worde cen not
touch. They have their own field of vague emotions that please or
disturb ue quietly; and the field of borderline emotions that leave
us uncertain whether we have felt them or not -- such as the deep
vibrations of an engine in a ship that we hear and do not hear.
The beginner in reading photographs wi11 do well to
remembor that the end result of an interpretation is not a word hook
by which to hang a picture, but the experiencing of e photograph.
