Most of this picture adds up to strength, directions are
parallel to the frame, the shapes are lerge, tones solid, expression
of the face is both serious and indicstes power. The cut shapes, wall,
iron cross, hand, plaster, the shadowe cutting up original shapes,
these give a sense of immediacy to the whole, of sone thing happening
right now.
Whet ie happeni ng perhaps could be reeched by treating
the shapes as symbole. The question, however, do es not concern us
so much as what the open or cut forms contribute to the whole picture.
They account for the sense of the elice, of the immediate, of the
ob jeot cought in the act.
