LIBERTI FABULARUM AESOPIARUM LIBRI V, printed by Francis Halma at Amsterdam in 1701, with notes and Dutch translation David Hoogstraten and many engraved illustrations by J. V. Vianen. Phaedrus lived in the First Century of our era, and was a freedman of the Emperor Augustus. He made Latin versions of the terse little tales which even in his day had gradually acquired the name of Aesop and have since passed into every language as proverbs and figures of speech. Phaedrus had many imitators, the most famous of whom was La Fontaine who, however, greatly surpassed him in vivacity and humor. This Dutch edition is set in a large clean roman type, and the page is rendered peculiarly decorative by either a copper engraved initial letter O 1926, T. F. I. or a beautiful vignette illustrating the fable. ibert Aesepiarumlior translated by David oobstrat tabular
