The clearance and ro-building of the Boundary-street area in Be th-
nal Green,London,constitutes one cf the most notable instances of mun-
icipal slum demolition. The area covered l15 acres. The streets were 20
in mumber and the average population per room was about 2, 107 rooms
having 5 or more inhabitants each. The streets and courts were very nar
row, the wi.dest being only 28 ft. across. In many cases there was a great

A large mumber of the houses had no back vards and many of the sall
courts were of a very bad class. There were 730 houses,of which 652 were
cccupied,wholly or partly,by persons of the labourin

The population, exclusive of those in lodging -houses, was 5,566-vis.,
3,370 adults and 2,196 children,who cccupied 2,545 rooms subdivided as
