A village, in the midst of country estates or a group of
model homes, built to beautify squalid surroundings, requires
distinetion and picturesqueness quite different from ordinary
homes. The English Elizabethian half-timber cottage is one of
those that best meets this requirement, and so these houses were
designed in this style with tile block walls covered with stucco on
the outside and plaster on the inside, with wooden half-timber
and slate roofs

It has not been forgotten. however, that these houses must
withstand wear and abuse. and so the finish inside is plain and
substantial, with yellow pine trim and floors. a kitchen sink.
water eloset and cast iron stove for cooking and heating.
With a cellar added, a hot air furnace, and a combination sink, laundry trays and tub, these houses are called No. 370a.
In the illustration are three groups, one at each end of four houses, and a center one of eight. The end groups can be turned to face an open court
which would then be surrounded by buildings on three sides and by the street on the fourth. This arrangement breaks the monotony of long rows of
houses and makes the units resemble in their setting. large individual houses.
These houses can be erected in quantities at a cost that will permit their renting at from $8 to $12 a month and afford a fair return on the
investment.
